What is diabetes?

Diabetes is a chronic disease that affects more than 10% of the United States population. It occurs when your body can’t properly balance sugar in your bloodstream due to genetics, obesity, or unhealthy lifestyle habits. Diabetes education at Premier Physicians Weight Loss and Wellness helps you better control blood sugar and reduce the risk of complications.

What are the different types of diabetes?

Diabetes education plans vary based on the type of diabetes. Type 1 diabetes usually develops during childhood and appears when your body doesn’t make enough insulin to control blood sugar. As a result, you’ll likely need to use insulin injections.

Type 2 diabetes often appears after age 40 and results from being overweight, having poor dietary habits, or lack of exercise. If you have Type 2 diabetes, you may need to lose weight, make lifestyle changes, and/or take diabetes medications.

Prediabetes is a condition that increases blood sugar levels, but they aren’t yet high enough to be classified as diabetes. Prediabetes is a usually reversible problem – if you adopt healthy lifestyle habits and maintain a healthier weight.

What is diabetes education?

Diabetes education at Premier Physicians Weight Loss and Wellness includes learning more about diabetic meal planning, , reducing insulin resistance, weight management and other healthy habits to keep blood sugar levels within a normal range. This reduces your risk of diabetes complications, such as eye damage, nerve damage, foot problems, heart disease, kidney disease and dementia.

What should I expect during diabetes education?

The Premier Physicians Weight Loss and Wellness team tailors a diabetes education program to meet your needs and unique lifestyle.

To develop a treatment plan, they’ll first review your medical history, lifestyle habits, and current dietary patterns. They also weigh you and assess your body mass index (BMI). Then, they check your vital signs, complete a physical exam, and review the results of your blood tests.

Your provider at Premier Physicians Weight Loss and Wellness also provides dietary recommendations, the best ways to exercise and advice on how to keep stress levels low.

They can also help you manage your body weight using pharmacotherapy including anti-obesity medications/GLP-1's if needed, dietary supplements, and regular weigh-ins.  A reduction in weight if you have Type 2 diabetes may allow you to take fewer diabetes medications or lower medication dosages.
