Deciding to lose weight is easy. Sticking with your plan is hard. Fortunately, medical weight loss can help, and so can the tips in this post. Here’s how to stay on track and get rid of unwanted pounds.

Roughly 160 million Americans are dieting to lose weight. If you’re one of them, you know how challenging it can be to stick with a weight loss plan.

The good news: Medical weight loss at Premier Physicians Weight Loss & Wellness can help you set realistic goals and achieve them. In this post, Dana Trippi, DO, and her team offer a few tips to help you stay on track with your weight loss journey.

Enroll in a medical weight loss program

Losing weight isn’t just about eating less and exercising more. It depends on various factors that can vary from one person to another.

Medical weight loss incorporates individual differences. Before starting your plan, we perform a medical exam and tests to look for nutritional deficiencies and other issues that could get in your way. Then we tailor your plan to your needs and goals.

Get plenty of sleep

You probably thought this list was going to be all hard work! But quality rest is important for losing weight and keeping it off. A lack of sleep can lead to disruptions in hormones that help regulate your appetite and make it harder to keep your insulin and glucose levels stable.

Try to get 7-9 hours of sleep each night, and consider these tips from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine to ensure your sleep is as restful and restorative as possible.

Clean out your cupboards

It’s a lot easier to stick to a healthy eating plan when your cabinets aren’t bursting with sweets and prepackaged foods. Replacing unhealthy choices with nutrient-rich options helps you make smart food choices without nearly as much effort.

Swapping fresh fruit and unsalted nuts for sugary snacks and fried foods is a no-brainer. But look beyond the obvious. For instance, use brown rice and whole-grain pastas instead of white varieties. Be creative and read those food labels whenever you shop.

Make a menu plan

Planning what to eat isn’t nearly as much fun as eating, but planning a menu in advance makes sticking to an eating plan easier. If you’re not sure what to cook, look for healthy recipes online — check out the Mediterranean diet and DASH diet for starters.

Look for ways to include lots of vegetables, fruits, and lean or vegetable-based proteins, like soy products and beans. Batch cooking lets you make multiple meals in one cooking session so you’re not tempted by fast food or takeout after a hard day at work.

Get the right mindset

Most people are pretty impatient when they start dieting, but be realistic: You didn’t gain weight overnight, and you won’t lose it in a few days, either.

In fact, goals that are too aggressive could lead to feelings of failure that cause you to give up. Our team helps you set realistic goals and break larger goals into smaller objectives so you can celebrate your progress along the way.

Don’t deprive yourself

Don’t think about a diet in terms of what you can’t eat but in terms of moderation and portion control. If you just can’t live without french fries or cake, schedule those foods as an occasional treat and keep the portions small.

Scheduling treats helps you stay motivated and prevents binging. Plus, comfort foods can boost your mood and stave off frustration and feelings of deprivation.

Be kind to yourself

If you cheat on your diet, don’t let it get you down. Losing weight is hard for everyone, and being vigilant all the time is even harder.

Instead of beating yourself up, put it behind you and get back on track. A positive attitude and confidence in your capabilities can help you reach your goals a lot faster.
